History of Tequila Mixers

Some bad mouths say that Tequila Mixers came about as a way to disguise the taste of bad and cheap tequila that flooded the market. Others believe it was a clever ploy of barmen to make the Tequila Mixers look like a glowing green punch or taste like strawberry to make it more appealing to woman. Others take this story a step further and rumor that Tequila Mixers were devised as a way to get woman drunk faster and easier to pickup. Truth or not, tequila mixers like margaritas are tasty and there’s absolutely no rule whatsoever that a man can’t drink them too.

What To Use and What Not To Use as Tequila Mixers

Best tequila mixers are margarita and daiquiri flavored mixers. Other tequila mixers would include Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, 7-up, orange juice, cranberry juice, soda water, tonic, grapefruit juice. I never tried any of the coke brands as tequila mixers, but some say it is one of the most disgusting things ever. A close friend of mine just loves Mountain Dew tequila mixers. Desperados (beer and tequila mixers) are lethal, especially the kind where you “shake” or “slam” the beer tequila mixers just before drinking them.

Tequilla Bum Bum: Beer Tequila Mixers

Anyone up for Tequila Bum Bum? Pour a shot of tequila in a oversized shot glass. Fill up with beer, leaving only half an inch or so at the top. Place palm on top of glass. Slam 3 times on bar or table. Shoot immediately. Enjoy it going up and down before coming to rest in your stomach. Repeat until you pass out. Don’t worry, it won’t take too long!

What Type of Tequila To Use in your Tequila Mixers

It would be close to a crime using an Añejo or Extra Añejo in tequila mixers. Those are too good and you better drink them the traditional way. Salt, Lemon, else wise pure, shot it.
The transparent variety or the gold ones are good enough. Don’t even think about using a 100% Blue Agave in a tequila mixer. That probably does constitutes a crime, at least in Mexico, and Emiliano Zapata himself will come and punish you.

History of the Most Famous of All Tequila Mixers: the Margarita

It doesn’t matter if you like your Margarita on the rocks or frozen, fact is that a Margarita is the most famous of all Tequila Mixers.

Various people claim the honor of creating this most famous of tequila mixers, but most likely it evolved out of the “Tequila Daisy” which is made from Tequila, lime juice. grenadine and club soda.

  • In the early 1930 both the bar at the Agua Caliente Racetrack and Bertita’s bar in Tasca claim to have invented the Margarita
  • in 1934, a bartender named Willie from Mexico City created a special drink for Marguerite Hemery, friend of the owner of the restaurant “Las Dos Republicas” in Matamoros, Mexico.
  • Supposedly Danny Negrete from the hotel bar Garci-Crespo in Puebla, Mexico offered the first Margarita as a wedding present to his brother David’s fiance Margarita.
  • The Margarita could well have been an homenage to Rita Haywordt (real name: Margarita Cansino) by Enrique Bastate Gutierrez. He claims to have created the Margarita in her honor in the early 1940s. Then again, another story claims Margarita Cansino worked at the Agua Caliente Racetrack bar before her movie carreer and inspired the local bartender there.
